‘Big Summer Sale’ Tops $10,000 in Revenues for the Friends of the Charlevoix Public Library

The Community Rooms and upstairs hallway of the Charlevoix Public Library were taken over by the Friends of the Library for their annual “Big Summer Sale,” between June 26-28. Thousands of books, puzzles, and even scale model ships and airplanes were displayed for sale during the event.

When the dust settled, more than $10,000 had been raised for the library’s Youth Department for their purchase of books and other materials they deem necessary. This was the third time in the last six years that the summer sale has generated more than $10K in sales. Annually, the Friends contribute more than $28,000 to the Youth Department from the ongoing book sale and other special events that are held.

Throughout the year, the Friends sell gently used books and other materials, out of the Breyer Friends Book Sale room, which is open every day the library is open. But, the “Big Summer Sale” is when the storage room empties, and we bring out all of our rare and collectible volumes that can’t be easily displayed otherwise. New this year was a $5 “bag sale” on Sunday. Patrons could buy a specially branded shopping bag and fill it with as many one dollar items as would fit from our downstairs display areas. Over 30 bags were sold that day.

Sue Parr, Friends Vice President and Chair of the Book Sale, expressed her gratitude to the patrons for their support and also to the many volunteers who worked the sale, as well as the library staff for their assistance and patience during the event. Plans are already underway for next year’s sale with the hope for even greater success.
