Two $750 Merit Awards are offered—one for Friends groups serving populations under 12,000 and one for those serving 12,000 or more. This recognition honors exceptional library support projects or activities completed during the previous year. Applications are evaluated on planning, implementation, evaluation of results, innovation, and community involvement. To be eligible you must (a) be an active member of FOML at the time the award is made, (b) have been a member for the 12 months of the prior year, and (c) be submitting the application for achievements in the prior calendar year. Applications for the Merit Awards will be accepted between January 1 and 31 each year.

FOML offers up to two annual grants of $750 each in honor of founding member, Harriet Larson. The grants support Friends groups that are newly forming, rejuvenating after inactivity, or implementing innovative approaches to membership growth and library advocacy. Applications are reviewed twice yearly (March 31 and September 30 deadlines) and require current FOML membership, library director approval, and submission of bylaws. Applicants must provide a concise two-page request detailing their group’s history or formation plans, specific funding needs with itemized costs, and membership information. Recipients are ineligible to reapply for three years, with preference given to groups having or pursuing 501(c)3 status and Michigan Non-profit Incorporation.
